In addition to his practice, Spence has served as chair of the Mecklenburg Bar Association’s Tax Section, a board member and editor of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Tax Section newsletter and a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers. In 2025, he received the NCBA Tax Section's Tax Law Lifetime Achievement and Service Award.
