John Wester Inducted Into 2026 NC Legal Practice Hall of Fame
The North Carolina Bar Association inducted Robinson Bradshaw litigator John R. Wester into the 2026 Legal Practice Hall of Fame, which recognizes inductees for “a lifetime of exemplary service, high ethical and professional standards, and service as role models for North Carolina’s legal community.”
Wester has represented clients as trial and appellate counsel in complex business litigation, including noteworthy cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. He has dedicated a significant portion of his practice to pro bono work, including Hyatt v. Shalala, an 18-year class action in the federal courts, in which Wester and his colleagues won new disability hearings under revised national standards for a class of 150,000 North Carolinians.
Outside his wheelhouse of business litigation, Wester has brought and defended cases advancing constitutional issues. He served as lead counsel for North Carolina Gov. James Martin and his cabinet in a federal class action challenging the constitutionality of employment practices in state government, and he has since represented multiple governors of both political parties in cases protecting the governor's authority under the separation of powers.
In 2009-10, Wester served as president of the North Carolina Bar Association and Foundation. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, where he served as North Carolina chair of the College and as the inaugural chair of its Committee for Judicial Independence.
Wester earned his law degree with high honors from Duke University School of Law, where he was note and comment editor of the Duke Law Journal. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a Morehead Scholar.
