In an article discussing the dangers of “compassion fatigue” among overworked attorneys, North Carolina Lawyers Weekly featured Robinson Bradshaw’s “vacattical” policy as an forward-thinking example of how firms can help their lawyers recharge out of the office. Once every five years, the firm’s partners are each encouraged to take off a three-week block of time, in addition to their regularly allotted vacation. Attorneys often combine the two, resulting in a month or more to decompress. Robinson Bradshaw attorney and board member Kelly Loving spoke of the firm’s intentions behind the policy.

“The idea is to just unplug and do whatever you’re going to do to get away and really rejuvenate and renew your focus,” Loving said.

She also explained that the firm’s clients benefit from the policy when attorneys return from vacattical more focused and able to hit the ground running.
