Overview

Garrett Steadman represents clients in complex litigation disputes. He has advised clients at various levels of litigation, from fact investigation through the appeals process. Garrett maintains a diverse commercial litigation practice, with a focus on appellate work and multi-party litigation. He has represented clients in antitrust, unfair and deceptive trade practice, breach of contract, employment, class action and other general business litigation matters. Garrett enjoys assisting his clients through complex cases to find direct avenues to achieve their desired resolution.

Complex Business Litigation

  • Represents a major national food grower in defense of a multibillion-dollar antitrust class action alleging a price-fixing conspiracy.
  • Represents one of the nation’s largest corporations in bankruptcy estimation litigation involving thousands of claimants and successfully investigated litigation practices to minimize the client’s liability.
  • Represents the nation’s leading technology software vendor for state record filing systems in defense of a class action asserting constitutional violation claims.
  • Represented the nation’s leading home improvement corporation in defense of class action wage and hour claims and obtained a favorable resolution of the dispute.
  • Assisted the North Carolina Department of Justice in litigation against an e-cigarette manufacturer and helped secure the nation’s largest settlement in a similar litigation.

Appellate Litigation

  • Represents the largest health care system in North Carolina in defense of malpractice claims implicating the standard of care applicable to nurse practitioners.
  • Represents a North Carolina physician medical practice in defense of malpractice claims in a case seeking to redefine the scope of medical malpractice actions under North Carolina law, with major implications for the entire medical profession.
  • Represented a national insurance company in a complex appellate case involving questions of statutory interpretation implicating the entire insurance industry, and obtained wins on appeal at both the North Court of Appeals and North Carolina Supreme Court.
  • Represented a life insurance company on appeal of negligence claims and successfully overturned a multimillion-dollar adverse jury verdict after trial.
  • Represented a historical Christian organization in North Carolina in the defense of a challenge to the zoning permit for a new facility and successfully reversed adverse district court judgment.

Pro Bono

  • Represented a client in a dispute over a franchise agreement and successfully extricated her from an oppressive agreement that was inhibiting her ability to financially support herself.
  • Represented a client in an appeal involving applicability of domestic violence dispute orders as applied to same-sex couples in a case that encouraged state legislature to update laws.
  • Filed an amicus brief on behalf of religious organizations in support of a schoolteacher who was fired from a religious school for announcing same-sex marriage.
  • Represented inmates in First Amendment appeals concerning challenges to prison accommodations, religious exercise and free speech.
