As Robinson Bradshaw celebrates its 65th anniversary this month, the firm is pleased to announce that Stephen Cox will serve as its new managing partner. In that role, Cox will lead the firm’s 175 lawyers and 105 professional staff members across four offices in the Carolinas.
Cox joined Robinson Bradshaw in 1997 and became a shareholder in 2003. During his tenure at the firm, he has earned a reputation as a trusted, approachable leader. The firm’s shareholders elected him to Robinson Bradshaw’s board of directors for the past 14 years, culminating this year with his election to serve as the firm’s next managing partner.
“Robinson Bradshaw has operated at the highest standards of practice ever since Russell Robinson founded the firm in 1960,” Cox said. “We consistently provide excellent legal service to our clients while maintaining an unswerving commitment to teamwork and collegiality among all our lawyers and professional staff. As we look to the future, I am committed to innovation and growth without compromising these values or our culture.”
In his legal practice, Cox represents business clients in the litigation and arbitration of complex commercial matters, focusing on construction, employment and corporate governance disputes. Admitted to practice in North Carolina and South Carolina, he has represented parties in numerous class actions and derivative actions and has significant experience in both states' business courts. Cox has appeared before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court, has handled numerous arbitrations before national and federal authorities, and regularly serves as an arbitrator and mediator himself. In recognition of his successes on behalf of clients, Cox is regularly recognized by publications like Best Lawyers, Super Lawyers and Benchmark Litigation.
Cox graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his law degree cum laude from Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, Cox served for one year as a law clerk to the Honorable R. Markley Dennis Jr. of the South Carolina Circuit Court before joining Robinson Bradshaw.
Cox succeeds Allen Robertson, who will step down after 10 years of service. Robertson will continue his legal practice as an experienced, nationally recognized public finance lawyer.
“During his tenure as managing partner, Allen led our firm through challenging times and pivotal moments, including a pandemic, the transition to a hybrid working environment, and the move to a new Charlotte office,” Cox said. “We deeply appreciate his service over the last decade and would not be where we are today without his unwavering, tireless commitment to our firm and its people.”
